Unveiling Valley Cemetery "Manchester's Valley Cemetery is in need of a facelift." That's the first line of an article that appeared in the Union Leader on March 7th. To address this problem, in 2001, members of the Educational Continuum at Southern New Hampshire University formed an organization called Friends of the Valley Cemetery. Today, after forming a non-profit corporation, we have launched a program that will restore the Valley Cemetery to a beautiful Victorian garden cemetery. It will again become the gem in the center city for mothers to walk children or have a picnic in the quiet valley. Our first effort is to prepare a Master Plan which will identify problem areas and recommend how to fix them. To do this, in partnership with the city of Manchester, we have hired the firm of Paysage landscape architects. They are bringing a team of architects, historical preservationists, an iron fence forge company and a stained glass studio to do a complete study. They will make recommendations that will be used to begin the restoration of the cemetery. The Valley Cemetery is a wonderful place. You can stand stand in the valley and not know you are standing in the center of New Hampshire's biggest city. Our goal for the future is to make this cemetery a pleasant place to visit. This can only be accomplished with support from people like you. Please become a member of the Friends of the Valley Cemetery and help us restore it to its original grandeur. A membership application can be found on this Website. Sincerely, John Wood, Chairman |
