Friends Receive Donations from
Hunt Foundation and DAR

The Friends of the Valley Cemetery received a $15,000 grant from the Samuel Hunt Foundation recently. The funds will be used to pay the balance due Paysage, the group charged with creating a master plan for the revamping of the 20-acre Valley Cemetery.

Also aiding the Friends is the local Molly Stark Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. At a Tuesday, March 12 reception at the Millyard Museum, Mrs. Diana Duckoff, Regent of the Chapter, presented a gift of $10,000 to the Friends of the Valley Cemetery.

Part of those funds will go toward applying for the registration of the Valley Cemetery in the National Historic Register. Such a distinction would allow the Friends to apply for federal funding and would put the Valley Cemetery on the map of historical destinations.

The next meeting of the Friends of the Valley Cemetery will be Tuesday, April 9 at 10 a.m., at the New Hampshire Art Institute. Featured speakers will include T.J. Rand, a genealogist, and Antoine Roy, a grave stone engraver. The meeting is open to the public - all are welcome!

A word from the Chairman...

Hello! Welcome to the first edition of our new monthly newsletter. As the scope of the Friends of the Valley Cemetery group grows, we are enjoying a boost in membership - over 100 members - and the realization of our goals.

Founded by Southern New Hampshire University's Education Continuum, the Friends of the Valley Cemetery are looking forward to a time when the once plush, cared for Valley will resemble the beautiful Victorian garden cemetery it was.

We have recently enlisted the expertise and services of Paysage, a Massachusetts based group of landscape architects. Along with Paysage come a lengthy list of specialists, including preservation consultants with over fifteen years of experience in the preservation of historical burial grounds and cemeteries. Architects will address the condition of the cemetery's chapel, which we hope to turn into a welcome center, and engineers will review the Valley's structures and drainage system. Finally, arborists will inventory and assess the cemetery's trees, stained glass specialists will examine the chapel windows, masonry specialists will assess and treat tombs and mausoleums, and the condition of the perimeter fence will be reviewed.

We are enthusiastic about our progress and are empowered by the response we've received from the community.

Please consider becoming a member of the Friends of the Valley Cemetery and help us restore it to its original grandeur.

Sincerely,
John Wood
Chairman
